Dr. Anna Thompson was here at ABRT on Saturday Jan. 28th to answer questions and discuss some treatment options for our horses.  It was very educational and everyone went away with some new knowledge.  Some of the highlights were worming practices and laser therapy.  Dr. Thompson discussed resistance of worming products and the safety of these products in horses.  Dr. Thompson helped us to simplify our rotations of our worming products and know what products can be harmful.  She discussed proper ways to dispose of manure and seasons of high infestation.  The products with the least resistance are Quest products and ivermectin, she calls these products the big guns.  These products must be rotated or they too will lose their effectiveness.  The products with the greatest amount of resistance are pyrantel, panacur, and safeguard.  However these wormers do have there place in the rotation and still must be used.  When you get ready to put your horses on a worming schedule come see us at Alabama Blue Ribbon Tack and we will help you choose the right product for your horses.
Ultra Equine specializes in the treatment of lameness, with several different therapies. One of the therapies that Dr. Thompson discussed with us is Laser therapy.  She explained that the laser therapy is a noninvasive treatment that causes tissues to react on a cellular level and promote healing.  In her own practice she has seen GREAT results and shared some case studies with us.  The laser therapy can be useful in ligament and tendon injuries, wounds, joint disorders, and general soreness to name a few.  She demonstrated the effects on Luther who gave it 2 paws up and wouldn't leave Dr.Thompson alone because he wanted more time with the Laser.  A good time was had by everyone and we all learned a lot of important information, lunch was good too!!!!  Thank you Anna Thompson of Ultra Equine for taking away time from your busy schedule to spend time with us!!
